Sport is at the core of Durham student life, offering a vast array of opportunities. From joining college teams to competing at the University level and beyond, Durham provides exceptional avenues to get involved. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or a beginner looking to try something new, Durham’s sports programs are inclusive and welcoming.

Our unique college structure is one of the reasons sport thrives at Durham. With opportunities to participate in 18 different sports across 700 teams, it’s the largest internal sports program in Britain. This not only keeps you active and healthy but also provides a strong social network, crucial for settling into university life.

Competing for Durham was one of the best decisions I made. I made lifelong friends and felt an immediate sense of belonging through my team. The Maiden Castle sports facility, where I spent a majority of my time, is a beautiful space to train, study, or simply hang out with friends.

Other things I valued about the experience were the connections I made with the DU staff and the places I got to travel for sports competitions. I was incredibly thankful for the staff who supported us and helped build lasting connections with the University. Their guidance and encouragement were invaluable, and the bonds formed with them are something I will cherish.

Getting to travel was another great part of the experience. Competing against other universities allowed me to see different parts of England, providing a unique opportunity to explore new cities and campuses. These trips added an extra layer of excitement and adventure to the sports experience at Durham.

Fitness and sport have always been integral to my life, but you don’t need to be an experienced athlete to get involved at Durham. The college structure encourages beginners to explore new sports. My boyfriend, for instance, played on three teams: water polo, football, and basketball, despite never having formal training in any of them.

Playing on a sports team enriched my university experience in countless ways. It boosted my motivation academically and professionally, supported my mental health, and built a fun and fulfilling social life. The connections and friendships formed through sports were invaluable.

I hope you take the opportunity to explore Durham University’s sports programs and gain as much as I did from this incredible experience. Whether you’re looking to compete at a high level or just try something new, there’s a place for you here at Durham. Join us, and become part of our vibrant sports community!
