Autumnal things to do in Durham

Autumn in Durham has always been my favourite time of year. There is something magical about the season in Durham. As the leaves turn brown and the evenings draw in, the city transforms into a cosy space. Whether you are looking to romanticise a study break, for a new weekend hobby, or just an excuse to enjoy the crisp autumn air, Durham has plenty to offer. Here are some autumnal activities to make the most of the season:

Go pumpkin picking

If you’re looking for a classic autumn activity, several local farms around Durham offer pumpkin patches in October. I once took a short train into Darlington to visit the Baydale pumpkin patch (which I would highly recommend). It is a fun day out with friends (and perfect for photos), plus you will have a pumpkin ready for carving, which is a whole other activity.

Explore Durham Cathedral After Dark

Durham Cathedral always feels atmospheric, but on a crisp autumn evening, it’s especially striking. Keep an eye out for special evening events, concerts, or candlelit services, which are a wonderful way to experience the building in a new light.

Take an autumn walk along the River Wear

Few things beat a stroll around the River Wear. The riverside paths around Prebends Bridge or the loop near Maiden Castle are particularly beautiful in Autumn. Bring a hot coffee, wrap up warm, and take in the most stunning views of the Cathedral.

Try seasonal food and drink

Autumn is all about comfort food. Warm up with a spiced latte or hot chocolate from one of Durham’s many cafés. I will always recommend Flat White Kitchen and Riverview Kitchen. Pubs like The Victoria Inn or The Dun Cow are also great spots for hearty meals after a chilly day out. I have also heard that Whitechurch do the best Sunday Roasts, though I am yet to try myself.

Decorate your flat/room

I personally love a trip to Durham’s retail in the Autumn to buy a couple of seasonal decorations that make my space feel more homely. When I was younger, we always had a pumpkin spice candle or a wreath on the door, so I like to continue this tradition at Durham. The house feels much more inviting, and it even boosts my motivation to be productive in things like studying and keeping the house clean.

Attend the Lumiere Festival (if you’re lucky!)

If your time in Durham coincides with Lumiere (held every two years in November), don’t miss it. The city is transformed into a glowing gallery of light installations, and the Cathedral becomes the centrepiece of an incredible spectacle. The next Lumiere is this November (2025).

Autumn in Durham is a season to slow down, take in the beauty of the city, and make memories with friends. From pumpkin patches to riverside walks, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the charm of Durham as the leaves fall.

I am currently completing my PGCE in Secondary Spanish with the Education department. I also studied Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC) at Durham as an undergraduate and during that time, I completed a year abroad in Spain and Italy. I'm a supported progression student from the North East and a very proud member of Josephine Butler College. When I am not on placement in the classroom, you can probably find me reading a thriller book or baking. As a student, I have taken part in some of Durham's societies. I was a project coordinator for MLAC Outreach Society, a Student Ambassador, and a member of the 93% club.
