Dressing for success: The story behind The Durham Wardrobe Collective

Hi everyone! I’m really excited to share the story of a project close to my heart — The Durham Wardrobe Collective (TDWC).

If you’ve ever panicked before an interview because you didn’t have the “right” outfit or skipped an event because formalwear is too expensive, you’ll understand why TDWC exists.

How it all started

TDWC began from a psychology student’s research project exploring how access to professional clothing impacts confidence and opportunity at university. After looking at similar initiatives at other universities like Nottingham Trent University, the idea landed in the hands of a small incubation team, a part of Enactus Durham, five students determined to make it happen.

What started as a few conversations and late-night planning sessions quickly grew into something real. One of our early supporters, Darren Tate, a local entrepreneurship leader, donated a large collection of suits and shared invaluable insights into why access to professional clothing matters. That generosity gave TDWC its first major boost.

What we do

TDWC is a student-led professional wardrobe offering affordable, high-quality clothing for interviews, placements, and networking events. From blazers and shirts to accessories and shoes, our aim is simple — to help every student feel confident, prepared, and professional.

We also collaborate with Durham University’s Careers and Enterprise Centre to host pop-up events, LinkedIn headshot sessions, and style consultations. These events not only provide students with clothes but also a chance to build confidence and learn how to present themselves in professional environments.

Last year, our team was thrilled to attend the Enactus National Expo, where TDWC was awarded 2nd place alongside another Durham project, Taka Taka Zero — a huge milestone for our growing initiative.

The journey so far

Today, TDWC is run by one undergraduate (that’s me!) with support from amazing partners, including Durham Careers & Enterprise, Venture Lab, and Smart Works. Our mission is to keep building a sustainable, long-term project that grows with the Durham community.

We’re also looking for new volunteers to help us expand, from managing donations to hosting pop-ups and offering style advice. Every contribution helps us make professional clothing more accessible and sustainable for students.
