Reflecting on my first year at uni
As my first year at Trevelyan College comes to an end, I’ve had time to reflect on what a nice and supportive community Trev’s really is. Moving to university can be overwhelming, but my experience at Trevelyan made that transition so much smoother- and honestly, fun.
One of the things that stood out from the beginning was how helpful the Freps (Fresher Reps) were during Freshers’ Week. They guided us around, explained how everything worked, and made sure no one felt left behind. It set the tone for the kind of community Trev’s gives: welcoming, inclusive, and supportive.
Support is there if you need it
Throughout the year, Trev’s has consistently offered wellbeing support, with weekly drop-in sessions and events clearly posted on social media. It’s comforting to know there’s always someone to talk to or resources available when things get stressful.
Get involved
I also got involved in quite a few activities. I joined the badminton and tennis societies, which were a great way to stay active and meet new people. On top of that, I had the chance to be the Publicity Officer for the HEX, Trevelyan College’s student magazine. That role gave me valuable experience in communication and marketing-and a great addition to my CV!

Have fun!
Trevelyan also knows how to celebrate. Trev’s Day was a highlight this year, with a live band, a dance machine, a mechanical bull, and even an outdoor mini bar set up just for the occasion. The gowned formals each month, complete with the ‘quirky spoon’ tradition, and the college balls make for some unforgettable nights.

A catered college
One of the biggest practical perks of Trevelyan is that it’s catered. Not having to worry about cooking during a busy academic term really took a lot of pressure off. It gave me more time to study, relax, and socialise without the stress of meal planning. Whether it’s chatting in the JCR (Junior Common Room) or just bumping into someone in the dining hall, Trev’s has so many spaces to meet people and build connections.
Looking back, my first year at Trevelyan College has been a truly positive experience. The support, the events, the opportunities, and the community made it easier to adjust to university life.
