4am over Durham after St Aidan’s College Summer Ball💜
✎ After Hill College Summer Balls – both St Aidan’s and St Mary’s were present when these photos were taken – a common tradition is to watch the sun rise over Durham Peninsula and the Penshaw Monument in the distance from Observatory Hill; this is followed by a ‘Survivors’ Breakfast’ after returning to college, for those who have stayed awake the whole night!
✎ Observatory Hill also features the Durham University Observatory – while telescopes are now positioned atop the physics building, Durham has the second longest unbroken meteorological record of any University in the UK (after the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford), with records from the 1840s.
