What attracted me to Durham University?

I chose Durham University for its strong reputation and teaching quality in Economics, however the university has so more much to offer and countless opportunities to get involved with, beyond academics, to make the most of your time here.

Durham’s collegiate system is a huge benefit of studying here, especially as a postgraduate student it is a great way to quickly meet new people and settle in before the teaching starts to ramp up.

Studying MSc Environmental and Natural Resource Economics

My programme has been immensely rewarding, with excellent teaching quality and approachable professors who encourage questions and engagement. The new state-of-the-art business building is also a great bonus! I have been lucky enough to attend the Economics London Field Trip, in which myself and others on my programme spent two days visiting companies in the financial services sector. This provided me with invaluable insights into potential career paths within the industry and expanded my professional network, including meeting a number of Durham alumni!

The programme has imparted me with knowledge in climate economics, environmental valuation, econometric analysis methods, and natural resource economics, which prepares me for pursuing a role in climate risk and sustainability once I graduate.

The wider student experiences

The University has an incredible number of different sports and societies to get involved with. I’ve greatly enjoyed attending guest speaker talks organised by Durham University United Nations Association (DUUNA), the Business School as well as other faculties such as Politics and Law, which are open to all students. I would highly recommend attending the guest lecture talks, particularly those outside your faculty, as they are a great way to broaden your knowledge and expand your network.

My college also hosts weekly formals, which are themed around different celebrations (e.g. Black History Month, Diwali, Christmas) which have been a great way to enjoy time away from studying and be part of the college’s traditions.

What’s next?

As part of the Dissertation Abroad programme, I will be conducting my dissertation in Aix-Marseille University in France this summer, which I am incredibly excited for. This opportunity is unique to Durham University and is a key reason why I chose to study here.

I have greatly enjoyed my time at Durham so far and am looking forward to what the remainder of my time here brings!
