What is a South College townhouse?

If you’re wondering what it’s like to live in a South College Townhouse, then as a current Southie, let me help you out!

What’s in a townhouse?

In a South College townhouse, you will be sharing a block with 12 other university students. Within this block, there is a kitchen that everyone shares, equipped with three refrigerators, two sinks, a couple of microwaves, ovens and toasters. The space also comes with storage cabinets that students occupy on a first-come, first-served basis. However, don’t worry, there is plenty of space for everyone as I am a proud occupant of THREE cabinets. The kitchen is quite spacious, and with a lovely group of flatmates, spending time there can be fun.

Additionally, there are three more floors, each comprising four rooms and a few toilets. A single bathroom is shared between two people, who are generally neighbours on the same floor.

What is it like to share a bathroom?

As someone who hoping to get an en-suite, I was nervous about the experience of sharing a toilet with someone else. Yet, now after having shared the space with my flatmate for quite a few months, I must say it’s not an inconvenient experience at all. We’ve mostly settled clear of clashing routines by communicating our schedule in advance, and while we generally don’t find much trouble keeping the bathroom clean, we do receive help from the amazing cleaning staff every three days.

    What are the bedrooms like?

From my observation, the bedrooms in a townhouse are slightly more spacious than ensuite rooms, for obvious reasons. My experience with my bedroom has also been good as there is a decent amount of storage, with a wardrobe, a cabinet, a chest of drawers, some additional shelves and under-bed storage. The beds are also slightly bigger than most colleges. The room also comes with a desk and plenty of power sockets (six in total, I just counted).

Do all townhouses look the same?

There are slight differences in the layout across each block or townhouse, and while noticeable, there isn’t a functional difference between them. I’ve also observed that, while most room sizes and layouts are the same. There are a couple of rooms within a block with slightly more space, which I believe is due to the layout of the building.

Are postgraduate and undergraduate townhouses separate?

It depends, as I share the townhouse with both postgraduates and undergraduates. Though there are certain townhouses which are only undergraduates and others which are only postgraduates, so I believe it’s just a matter of chance.

And that is all from me, your unofficial virtual tour guide and part-time opinion giver. Hope you have the most fun with whatever choice you make!
