Why I chose to study an MA in Environmental Humanities

Hi there! If you’re interested in the environment and interdisciplinary studies within the Humanities, look no further! The Environmental Humanities MA at Durham University delivers on exactly these criteria and more, so let me explain to you why I chose this route for my postgraduate studies.

What drew me to this programme?

My interest in environmental studies was not contained to a particular discipline and I wanted that to be reflected in the programme’s structure. So my objective was to find an interdisciplinary master’s. Luckily this MA is exactly that!

I was really impressed by the wide selection of modules it offered. Options ranging from History to Literature, or Theology to Anthropology and even Law, I knew that with this master’s theoretical and disciplinary breadth I would be able to tailor my studies according to my interests.

I was also really drawn to the University’s reputation as an excellent centre of research and looking forward to the class discussions with people that shared my enthusiasm!

That support from professors I received when applying also influenced my choosing this programme. Everyone was so keen to help and inform me during the application process which was very welcoming and gave me a good feeling for the year ahead.

Why at Durham?

As a city surrounded by forests, fields, and close to the Lake District, Durham felt like the perfect place to slow down for my studies and a wonderful setting to connect with nature. Since my studies are entirely environmentally focussed, I wanted to be at a University that would help me be in tune with my interests and the subject matter of my classes.

I also did my undergraduate studies in a big city so I wanted to see how it was to study in a smaller city. And Durham was a wonderful change! It’s such a beautiful place no matter the season and I love the historic feel of the city. I knew it would be very special living there.

Continuing from undergraduate to postgraduate studies

Before studying Environmental Humanities, my undergraduate degree was English Literature.

As I approached the end of my BA I realised that my favourite modules over the years had been those that engaged with the environment and our relation to nature. Although I really enjoyed approaching environmental questions through literature, I wanted to expand into other disciplines and see what reflections and links could grow from there. For this reason, I knew I needed and wanted to do further studies.

I wanted to develop a wider understanding of how cultural mindsets have shaped and still shape our conception of nature and how that affects how we engage with it. And if you’re interested in the environment but do not know where to focus, this MA eases you into the topic by introducing current research in environmental theory throughout various humanities disciplines.

So what now?

This year in the programme has made me more confident in interpersonal and researching capabilities. The discussions were always stimulating and I was able to study everything that interested me while constantly discovering new perspectives and research. I was also able to go on a summer exchange trip and I learned more networking skills when dissertation season came in full swing!

After graduating I definitely want to dedicate my time to responding to environmental concerns by continuing research and contributing to conversations that can lead to active change. I can’t wait to see what the future outcomes this year will bring!
