Why I chose to study Natural Sciences

Which science

Natural Sciences was the option that allowed me to defer choosing a single subject to specialise in (I still haven’t). I studied A-levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths and knew I wanted to pursue science at university but had no clear choice between physics and chemistry. Being able to study both at a university level in the first year was immensely helpful and informative.

As you would expect, exploring a subject to greater depth and detail can alter your perspective hugely as well as introduce you to new areas of the field. In my experience, the type of chemistry/physics you study at A-level is not entirely representative of what it is like to study at degree level. I mean that in the best possible way. As your skill and understanding progresses you are introduced to the more complex and exciting topics firmly avoided at A-level.

I knew I found chemistry and physics interesting and was thrilled to have the chance to continue exploring both. I would recommend Natural Sciences to anyone in a similar position of indecision or curiosity.

Choosing Durham

The Natural Sciences course at Durham, which is not the same across all universities, allows you a degree of flexibility and choice which I have made the most of. You are trusted (with assistance and support) to plan your own modules and degree path to best suit your interests and future goals.

In my second year, I opted to move away from the defined Joint Honours pathway to take an extra physics module in place of a chemistry one. However, if you are looking to do a Joint Honours program or are intimidated by the thought of choosing modules then you can stick to defined routes of study.

When I was looking at choosing a university, Durham’s collegiate system appealed to me. The college sports system allows you to play multiple sports at a casual level while leaving time to prioritise university level sport if that is something you are interested in.

Looking forward

I am currently on a Placement Year with Jaguar Land Rover on their Future Propulsion Systems pathway. This is forming part of my current career route towards engineering and has been amazing.

Working in the Advanced Battery Materials Lab my chemistry knowledge of spectroscopy has given me a head start, and a strong foundation of physical principles has proved invaluable across all engineering.

I didn’t initially apply to the Placement Year program, but you can transfer across very easily if you change your mind.

I might be looking at a career in engineering, but I am still confident that Natural Sciences is the correct course for me. I have loved learning about topics like Condensed Matter Physics and Quantum Mechanics despite not looking to pursue a research career! Moving into my final year I have chosen to focus on physics doing 5 modules with just 1 physical chemistry module.

Will Baverstock

I am a Natural Sciences student from Van Mildert college on a Placement Year with Jaguar Land Rover. My course is mostly Physics modules with some Chemistry as I veered from the Joint Honours route in second year. I play in the university cricket team and multiple college sport teams.
