When people ask, “Why did you choose to study Anthropology at Durham University?” I often smile because, in a way, Anthropology chose me. In my home country, educational options are somewhat limited, so I never imagined that Anthropology could be my calling. My introduction to the field was through a unique MSc program offered by the Anthropology department: MSc in Sustainability, Energy, and Development. What drew me in was its openness, as it didn’t require a technical engineering background like most energy courses. I applied, was accepted, and suddenly found myself on an exciting new path.
Settling in
Arriving in Durham as an international student, I was miles away from home, unfamiliar with the city that would soon become my new home. My first real welcome came with an email from our course director inviting the new MSc cohort for a walk. Nervous yet intrigued, I joined the group as we wandered through the hills and streets of Durham, ending our journey at the stunning Botanical Gardens for coffee and cake. That day, I met classmates who would soon become friends and professors who made me feel welcomed and supported.
Choosing modules
The process of picking optional courses was daunting at first, but I soon realized just how engaging and valuable these modules could be. Some even rivalled the core subjects in enjoyment and insight. Exploring energy through an anthropological lens was refreshing as it expanded my perspective and showed me how I could apply anthropology in real-world contexts. It made me believe that my contributions could be meaningful, and my degree experience became all the more exhilarating.
Feeling like home
Coming from an energy background, I was eager to deepen my understanding of the green energy transition. This course has provided me with the critical perspective needed to examine energy transitions, always keeping social, environmental, and sustainability values at the forefront. Beyond academics, the department’s events have been invaluable in helping me connect with peers and faculty. One of my favorite places is the cozy common room, where I can relax with a coffee between classes or study sessions. It’s these moments and spaces that make the department feel like a true home to me.
As I settled into life at Durham, everything began to fall into place. Choosing this course and joining the Anthropology department turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The learning opportunities seemed endless and I felt right at home in lectures, where participating and sharing my experiences came naturally. The most encouraging feedback I received was that I had always been an anthropologist at heart; I just hadn’t realized it yet. Looking back, it’s clear to me that Anthropology truly chose me, and I’m grateful for the journey it has taken me on.
