Image - The Bouregreg River from the Kasbah des Oudayas

During my year abroad, I split my time between Rabat, Paris and Toulouse, and of those three, Rabat, Morocco was by far my favourite. Sunny days, glittering beaches, and noisy souks made up my daily routine in Rabat, and for no more than a fiver, a full day out and about could be had. Spend an average day with me and discover the joys of Moroccan cuisine and learning Arabic in its westernmost home.

8:00 am - wake up

My days started with an early rise. Although at first a tough pill to swallow, I soon realised waking with the sun was a vital necessity in order to complete the day's tasks and be fully hidden away before the afternoon heat. As a woman in Morocco, clothing often looked like a long skirt, a linen button-up and potentially a headscarf to avoid sunburn. Of course, my California self revelled in the opportunity to wear sandals to class, and after a quick getting ready and grabbing my books, I headed through the streets of the Agdal towards my school.

Me in the lobby of my school accommodation

8:30 am - class starts

At my language school, Qalam wa Lawh, class started promptly at 8:30. All students were offered a light breakfast at 8, and at half past, we began our lessons, which ran until 12:30. Our classes all began with the same question: “Madha fa’alti aams?”(What did you do yesterday?), which gave us all a chance to wake up, use a bit of Arabic, and catch up on one another’s goings on from the day before. Classes consisted of grammar practice, reading, and lots of speaking in Arabic, as most of the teachers above beginner level spoke only French or Arabic.

10:30 am - Istiraha (break)

Halfway through class, we had a brief 15-minute break where some fantastic Moroccan shai (mint tea) was served along with the option to purchase a msemen (Moroccan fried bread) from the kitchen for 50p. Morning msemen often served as my breakfast and is one of the things I miss most about my days in Morocco. It provided a bit of routine, and you were given the option to fill your msemen with either Jubn (soft cheese) or Nutella. After the break, classes resumed, and we all got back to work.

The courtyard at Qalam wa Lawh school

12:30 - lunchtime

At the end of classes, those who had opted to receive school lunches received a traditional Moroccan lunch, homemade in-house, which ranged from tagine to pastillas, or sometimes just a nice warm spag bol. Lunches provided a delicious and easy way to discover more of Moroccan culture.

1 pm - nap time

After class, in the middle of a Moroccan summer, the heat started to get quite intense, and the middle of the day was best avoided by a nap or film indoors. I would head home and turn on my AC before sprawling out on top of my sheets like a cat on a tile floor trying to stay cool. Moroccan houses are uniquely designed to repel heat and retain cool air (a stark contrast to the build of British houses), and I enjoyed avoiding the worst of the scorching sun.

5 pm - adventure into town

After the worst of the midday heat, a bit more fun could be had, and I usually didn’t start heading out into the city until 4 or 5 in the afternoon. Rabat is teeming with life well into the evening, and the time at which stores and restaurants close is incredibly flexible. In general, I found Moroccan culture to be remarkably laid back. I would usually start off my evening with a taxi to the Kasbah. A taxi across town rarely cost more than £2, and once there, I could make my way down to the beach with a freshly fried sugar doughnut in hand for the cost of 10p. The beach was often filled with life until late in the evening, and for 50p, you could take a short boat ride across the river to Salé beach and spend a bit of time dipping in the waves of the inlet and enjoying the sounds of boys diving off the rocks.

Rabat Beach with Salé in the background

A rug vendor in the souk

7:30 pm - Dinner

A couple of hours at the beach well spent, it was time to head into the souk for some dinner and light shopping. The street into the souk from the Kasbah was home to some amazing juice stands, and some lemon juice or freshly squeezed orange juice could be procured for 50p, making an excellent accompaniment for wandering through the Medina. If you went a bit off the beaten path, you could find the more local-heavy produce markets and pick up fresh watermelons or figs for a snack at home later in the week. With dinner on the mind, I would pick up a habricha sandwich for 70p and it was filled with egg, rice and meat.

9:30 pm - Homework

With the evening bustle starting to die down and shops beginning to close, I would catch a taxi back home to Agdal from outside Bab el-Had. Once home, I’d make a cup of tea, grab my books, and settle down at the dining room table to get my work done for the coming day. Homework could be anything from learning vocab to writing a paragraph about a new topic, and it always helped to solidify the topics from the day in my mind. Once I’d completed my homework, usually around midnight, I’d shut down the AC, and head to bed, ready for the day to come.

When I first told my family I was leaving Pakistan’s bustling metropolitan life for a small city in the North East of England, the reaction was a mixture of shock and confusion. Why trade a city of millions for Durham? At the time, I wasn’t entirely sure myself — I came for the academics, drawn by Durham's School of Government and International Affairs (SGIA) reputation and diversity. What I didn’t realise was how much more I would gain from this place. I arrived with two large suitcases carrying my life; I’ll leave with far more than I ever expected.

Settling into college life

Durham may be small, but it has a way of expanding to fit you. Coming from a city where 35°C summers are the norm, my first Northern English winter felt like a personal challenge — one I’m proud to say I survived. I was in Hatfield College on the Bailey, which made me feel close to the heart of the city. Weekly formals, late-night conversations, and meeting people from every corner of the world grounded me in a way I didn’t anticipate.

Getting my first job at the Hatfield café was another turning point. It wasn’t just about earning money; it was about becoming independent in a new country. Every shift made me feel like I was accomplishing something meaningful, building a life that was truly mine.

Hatfield College

Sunset over the river

First Impressions of SGIA

The core reason I chose Durham was SGIA. I still remember the disbelief I felt when I received my offer — it felt surreal that a department so well-known and globally respected wanted me. Walking into the Al Qasimi Building for the first time felt like stepping into the centre of something bigger than myself. The walls lined with framed photos of student trips — including volunteering in Cape Town — made me realise how many opportunities existed beyond the classroom.

Then I saw the display showing the 50+ nationalities represented in the department. For someone who had travelled continents alone, that moment mattered. It made me feel less like an outsider and more like someone joining a global community. SGIA doesn’t just teach international relations — it lives it.

Al Qasimi Building

A cultural exchange

My first seminar was for Comparative Politics in my first year, and I remember walking in with nerves buzzing. Coming from a very different educational background, I worried I wouldn’t fit in or keep up. Instead, the seminar felt like a cultural exchange. People shared perspectives shaped by their own countries, histories, and experiences. There was no judgment — only curiosity, acceptance, and genuine interest.

That atmosphere is what makes SGIA special. The diversity isn’t just demographic; it’s intellectual. You learn as much from your peers as you do from the readings. Discussions feel alive, shaped by real stories and lived realities rather than abstract theories.

Support that makes a difference

One of my biggest fears before arriving was whether I would be able to adapt academically. I didn’t realise how accommodating and supportive the faculty would be. SGIA offers peer mentors, academic advisors, and generous office hours — all of which I used, especially in my first year. No question was too small, no confusion too embarrassing. That support allowed me not just to adjust, but to excel.

There’s something empowering about knowing that the people teaching you genuinely want you to succeed. It makes the transition from one educational culture to another feel less daunting and more like a shared journey.

Being a woman of colour in politics

As a woman of colour and an international student studying politics, I carried quiet worries with me. Would I be taken seriously? Would my voice matter? Those fears dissolved quickly. Seeing women and men — from so many backgrounds — in positions of academic leadership was inspiring. It made me feel like I, too, could excel in this environment.

What struck me even more was learning that SGIA was the first Politics department in the entire UK to receive an Athena Swan award, and that it now holds a Silver Award. Knowing that the School has been recognised nationally for its commitment to gender equality made everything I was experiencing make sense. I felt comfortable sharing my opinions in seminars, never feeling undervalued or out of place. That sense of belonging is part of what motivated me to become an ambassador for the School of Government and International Affairs — a role that still feels surreal and deeply meaningful.

Looking back — and forward

Now, when I look back at my time here, I can say with complete honesty that choosing Durham was the best decision I’ve ever made. If a girl who moved continents to a town she had never visited — where no one spoke her language and everything felt unfamiliar — can feel this safe, supported, and at home, then the community here is truly larger than life.

Durham has given me more than an education. It has given me confidence, independence, friendships across continents, and a sense of belonging I didn’t know I needed. And yes — British food really isn’t that bad.

Being selected for the Chevening Scholarship and studying at Durham University has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my academic journey. Chevening is highly competitive, so it is a great honour to be part of this global community of scholars.

I feel very privileged to study at the Durham University Business School. As someone who is strongly passionate about economics, learning in such a respected academic environment is both inspiring and motivating. Being here encourages me to aim higher and continue progressing towards my aspiration of becoming an academic economist and contributing to economic research and policy design.

One of the things that first attracted me to Durham was the rigorous structure of the programme. The university’s strong academic reputation and the wide range of optional modules were also very important in my decision. After several months here, I have been impressed by the quality of the Business School, the excellent facilities, and the extensive academic resources available to students. Durham has a truly academic atmosphere that encourages curiosity, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence.

I am particularly enjoying the intellectual challenge of this master’s programme. The teaching is rigorous, classroom discussions are stimulating, and the support from professors has been extremely valuable. The programme is strengthening my analytical skills, deepening my understanding of economics, and helping me clarify my long-term professional goals.

Beyond academics, life in Durham is also very enjoyable. The city has a unique character, with its historic cathedral, castle, river, and colleges creating a special environment for study and reflection. I have grown very fond of this city, and it is a wonderful place to live and learn.

For anyone considering Durham, my advice is simple: be curious, work hard, and take advantage of the opportunities the university offers. If you are looking for academic excellence combined with a welcoming student environment, Durham is an excellent choice.
Finally, being a Chevening Scholar makes this experience even more special. The scholarship has connected me to a global network of talented individuals and provided valuable opportunities for personal and professional development. It is truly an inspiring community to be part of.

Discover more

Having just finished my first term at Durham University, I can tell you first-hand that student life can be expensive - especially when you don’t know how to budget. And yes, that was definitely me last term: too many sweet treats from Tesco, a few too many college bar drinks, and one or two online shopping splurges. So here are the tips I wish someone had shared with me in October.

The reality of food costs in Durham

How much you spend will look very different depending on whether you’re catered or self-catered. If you’re self-catered, food becomes one of your biggest weekly expenses. Most students default to Tesco because it’s convenient, but it’s worth exploring cheaper options, such as Aldi, Lidl, or Iceland, and making the most of loyalty cards. Every penny really does count.

Even if you are catered, it’s the “extras” that creep up on you: post-night-out takeaways, coffee between lectures, or brunch at Riverview Kitchen. These are completely part of the Durham experience, but they need to be factored into your weekly budget rather than treated as spontaneous extras.

Nights out are another major cost. A few things that have helped me:

- buying early-bird tickets

- making the most of cheaper college bars before going into town

- having the occasional sober social

- walking down the Hill with a friend instead of ordering an Uber

None of this means missing out; it just means being a bit more intentional with your spending.

Course costs add up

As an English student, I was surprised by how quickly books and printing costs accumulated. This term I’ve been using library copies more, buying second-hand from charity shops, and putting Waterstones vouchers on my birthday list (highly recommended).

Societies, sport and formal events can also become expensive. If this is something you’re struggling with, college finance support and JCR hardship funds are there for a reason; it’s always worth speaking to someone.

Where I went wrong last term

Independence comes with a learning curve. Freshers’ Week overspending is almost inevitable, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about it. The key is adjusting afterwards.

My biggest mistake was not tracking my spending at all. I didn’t open a student bank account, didn’t set a weekly limit, and had no idea how much I was actually spending. “Little treats” quickly became daily habits just for getting through a 9 am lecture, and by the end of the week, I had no money left.

Tracking your spending means you don't miss out on treats

What I’m doing differently this term

Tip 1: Set a weekly spending limit

Having a rough weekly budget has made the biggest difference. I split my money so I only use half Monday – Friday and keep the rest for the weekend. That way, I’m not broke by Thursday. Going over occasionally is normal; the goal is to be aware of what you are spending and not perfectly hit your weekly budget.

I also have a part-time job alongside my studies, and I know many other students who also do. It’s definitely helpful with extra spending money to boost my weekly budget, but time management is key, and I ensure that I always prioritise my degree.

Tip 2: Plan your food

If you’re self-catered, one big weekly shop (or two smaller ones) stops the “empty fridge = takeaway” cycle. I also try to bring lunch to the Bill Bryson Library instead of buying a meal deal as a reward for studying.

Tip 3: Track your money

This term, I’ve started using a simple spreadsheet to log what I spend and where. It sounds boring, but it’s genuinely helped me cut back on daily coffees and impulse purchases. Seeing it written down makes you far more conscious of your spending, but helps you visualise where it all is going.

Budgeting doesn’t mean saying no to everything; it just means being intentional and deliberate with spending. If one week you splurge, maybe keep in mind to cut back the following week. I still go to formals, have brunch with friends and enjoy many nights out - I am just more on top of my expenses and how they shape my student life at Durham.

From my experience, the first term is about figuring it all out, the second term is about balance. You will spend too much, get it wrong and have to re-adjust, but my main advice is that if you’re currently in your “Tesco sweet treat every day” phase - don’t worry. We’ve all been there!

As my postgraduate graduation approaches, I’m overwhelmed with a mix of excitement, nostalgia, and a touch of disbelief. The journey to this moment has been nothing short of transformative, marked by enriching experiences and connections that have shaped both my academic and personal growth. The thought of donning my gown brings a twist of emotions; it signifies both an ending and an exciting new beginning.

Looking back, my time at Durham has been a beautiful tapestry woven together by interactions with professors and classmates from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. Engaging with individuals from various parts of the world has provided me with a broad spectrum of perspectives. This diversity has enhanced classroom discussions, enriching our collective learning and fostering a supportive environment where ideas can flourish. The variety of academic approaches and cultural insights has not only deepened my understanding of the subjects but also helped me develop a more global mindset.

Careers support

One of the standout features of my experience at Durham University has been the dedicated support from the Professors and the Career and Employability Team. They offer a myriad of resources, both online and offline, providing comprehensive guidance on how to approach our career goals. From crafting tailored CVs to analysing potential internships and graduate schemes, the team has meticulously guided me through the process, ensuring that I make informed decisions about my future. Their workshops are not mere presentations; they are interactive sessions that foster real dialogue, allowing us to probe deeper into how to present ourselves effectively in the job market.

The support doesn’t stop there. Professors have been invaluable mentors, often providing advice on potential career paths aligned with our individual experiences. Their insights into the industry and genuine willingness to assist us in navigating our next steps have been incredibly reassuring. The abundance of resources, including the Durham portal, which lists numerous job openings, has made the daunting job search feel more manageable.

Preparing for graduation

As I prepare for graduation, the combination of nerves and excitement is palpable. It’s astonishing how swiftly this chapter of my life has come to an end. I find beauty in the chaos of emotions—stress, joy, fear, and anxiousness all blend together to form lasting memories. Each exam, each project, and each late-night study session, while challenging at the time, now shines brightly in my memory.

A beautiful city

One of the most memorable aspects of studying at Durham has been the stunning scenery throughout the seasons. From the cold, frosty winters to the vibrant colours of spring, the campus offers an ever-evolving backdrop that has mirrored our own journeys. The picturesque architecture often evokes a sense of magic, reminiscent of living in a Harry Potter film, despite its traditional English authenticity. This enchanting environment has provided not just a beautiful setting for learning but also a safe and welcoming space for international students like myself, alleviating some of the initial overwhelm of studying in a new country.

A supportive community

Throughout this journey, I’ve been fortunate to connect with an incredible community at Durham. The shared excitement and hope among my peers to navigate our futures has forged lasting bonds, creating friendships that I will cherish for years to come. The supportive atmosphere in the university, such as the Students' Union, makes it clear that we are all in this journey together, exploring shared interests and feeling a sense of belonging. As I look towards employment, the resources available at Durham continue to serve as guiding lights. The Alumni community is another invaluable asset, facilitating connections with those who have successfully navigated similar paths. Learning from their experiences will undoubtedly enhance my own journey.

In conclusion, preparing for graduation is more than just a ceremonial event; it is a celebration of growth and connection. My time at Durham has equipped me with the skills, insights, and memories that I will carry into my future. With optimism for what lies ahead, I embrace this new chapter, ready to step confidently into the world.

Above image - Van Mildert dining hall ready for a formal dinner

When I initially found out I had received a catered college allocation at Van Mildert College in Durham, I had mixed emotions. I was mostly relieved that I didn’t have to cook for myself every day - cause that would’ve probably been a disaster. On the other hand, I was also worried about losing independence, flexibility, and perhaps the ‘real’ university lifestyle that all my friends were experiencing at other universities. The truth, as it turns out, sits somewhere in the middle, but it certainly turned out to be far more positive than I first expected.

Is it restrictive to my day?

One of my biggest misconceptions about catered colleges was that the meal times would disrupt my routine on a day-to-day basis. Whereas, in reality, catering at Durham doesn’t mean disturbance, instead it just removes one pressure from an already busy student life that I would’ve certainly struggled with. Knowing that there’s a hot meal waiting at lunch and at the end of the day is surprisingly reassuring, especially during the first term when everything else feels new.

Generally, the meal times provide two hours for each sitting - breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which certainly allows me to find a suitable time around my studies or social activities. If I am unable to make lunchtimes, my college gives the option of pre-ordered packed lunches - which are honestly so easy and convenient when I have lectures over lunch! Similarly, you can also order a late takeaway dinner if you have sports, lectures, or social activities that clash with dinner timings.

What food is on offer?

In a catered college at Durham, you can expect a wide range of food that’s designed to be practical, varied, and inclusive. Typical options include cereals, toast, fruit, and cooked breakfasts in the morning, and lunches or dinners such as pasta dishes, curries, stir-fries, roasted meats or fish, and vegetarian or vegan alternatives.

There are usually salad bars, soups, vegetables, and desserts available, and catering teams accommodate dietary requirements like vegetarian, vegan, halal, and gluten-free. While you won’t love every meal, there’s generally enough choice to suit different tastes and routines. Sometimes I will grab a sandwich when out and about during the day, or treat myself to an occasional Durham meal out in town with some friends!

Catering provides a community

Catered colleges also play a huge role in building community. Eating together becomes part of the rhythm of college life with casual conversations over dinner, shared complaints about deadlines, or post-lecture debriefs that turn into friendships.

In a university that is built around a collegiate system, shared mealtimes are one of the easiest ways to feel connected, particularly early on when building new friendships and settling into the first term. It is a great way to meet people in your college.

St Mary's dining hall

Hatfield dining hall

What are the cons?

Of course, catering isn’t perfect, and it will never be. Some students may prefer it more than others. Before you come to university, you may decide that being self-catered is more your ideal, which is totally fine. I would advise you to choose what works best with your own lifestyle.

Meal times can sometimes clash with lectures or societies, and you won’t love every menu. There’s also the adjustment of planning your day around set meal windows, which takes a little getting used to.

But these are minor trade-offs, and most students quickly work out what suits them. It’s important to note that most catered colleges also provide kitchen access, meaning you’re not cut off from cooking entirely - you just get the choice.

My conclusion

Being in a catered college doesn’t take away independence - and it can sometimes support it. It allows you to focus on settling into university life, forming friendships, and engaging fully with Durham’s academic and social opportunities. For many students, catering isn’t a limitation at all, but a quiet advantage.

Do you have to love heritage to protect it?

I would humbly say “No”. There are many different pathways into this field, and a wide range of professionals contributing to the identification, protection, and management of heritage. I am not necessarily a heritage enthusiast driven by a passion for monuments or artefacts. Rather, I am interested in the process - someone who sees the values embedded in heritage, works to manage it responsibly, and connects it to future agendas. In today’s world, heritage is no longer seen simply as something to preserve; it is increasingly understood as a dynamic process, closely linked to the global conversations on cultural, social, economic, political, and environmental agendas.

Transforming Heritage Governance in Myanmar and Southeast Asia

Coming from Myanmar, a country rich in both tangible and intangible heritage, yet often shaped by ongoing conflict and a traditionally centralised heritage governance system, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges in advancing towards modern heritage management. On a national level, we are still at the stage where we admire the beauty of heritage sites and practices, but take limited action to preserve or safeguard them, use them sustainably in the present, or connect them meaningfully to future generations. My long-term goal is to transform Myanmar’s heritage governance (and broadly across Southeast Asia) into a more modern, regionally connected, and globally aligned system. I hope to advocate for a better alignment between national interests and global frameworks in the identification, protection, and management of cultural heritage.

Leadership and impact at the heart of Chevening

As a Chevening scholar, strengthening leadership skills lies at the heart of my decisions. I wanted to pursue a programme that would not only teach me ‘how’ to work in the field but also teach me ‘why’ to empower the transformational mission I carry for my country. The MA in International Cultural Heritage Management at Durham University was my first choice in my Chevening application. The programme is part of the UNESCO Chair in Archaeological Ethics and Cultural Practice, and offers a strong emphasis on international case studies, UNESCO cultural conventions, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), all of which are essential in governing today’s heritage management. Through this programme, I have gained real-world skills in producing and engaging with stakeholder engagement strategies, project management frameworks, scenario planning, and management plans. These are essential tools that I will apply when leading cultural heritage projects back home in a more effective and informed way.

Building skills and perspectives

I particularly value how studying a master’s degree allows me to engage in deeper research on the issues I care about, and the chance to contribute to scholarly debates as a voice from Myanmar. I have also appreciated the opportunity to contribute to projects and activities related to the Durham World Heritage Site through hands-on work. As a Chevening Scholar, my goal is not only to bring knowledge and skills back to my home country but also to contribute meaningfully to the UK during my time here. I find it deeply enriching to fulfil this mission by studying and living at a World Heritage site. It always helps me think comparatively about how heritage management systems differ between contexts, and what lessons can be shared across them.

Beyond the classroom

Through guest lectures and interactions with heritage organisations, including Blue Shield, the National Trust, Historic England, World Heritage UK and many others, I have also gained well-rounded perspectives on the UK’s heritage management system, current challenges, and future visions. It has also been a great experience to learn outside of the classroom, particularly through field trips to cultural and natural World Heritage Sites across the Northeast of England. Equally enriching is the opportunity to learn alongside classmates from across the world, each bringing their own perspectives on heritage management practices and governance systems. These diverse viewpoints make classroom discussions especially dynamic and insightful.

For future Chevening Scholars

There is a beautiful concept in my culture about sharing and thinking of others when you are having a good time. With that in mind, I would definitely recommend my programme at Durham University to future Chevening Scholars who are passionate about understanding the complex nature of heritage through international perspectives and global frameworks. I am sure you will have a unique opportunity to study and contribute at a global level while living within the beautiful World Heritage Site of Durham - something you should absolutely not miss for your life-changing journey.

What made you choose archaeology at Durham?

I have always had an interest in history, but the idea of sitting in a lecture theatre being talked at bored me. I wanted to get my hands on the history I was learning about. Being able to discover the history and touch things that haven’t been touched for centuries really appealed to me. When I was younger, my dad always joked that I’d become an archaeologist when I grew up and that someday I’d find the lost city of Atlantis. As for choosing Durham, I was mostly attracted to the castle and the cathedral, namely the history behind them and the architecture. I loved the course too; you get actual experience in the field, which is fantastic.

How did you end up working on the archaeological finds at Durham Castle?

Last term, I decided to change the focus of my studies from classical archaeology to medieval archaeology after a particularly insightful lecture. After a slight panic with my academic advisor, I signed up to volunteer with some building recording in the castle. I did a few sessions simply recording the walls behind the 20th-century panelling. Despite it being tedious at times, it was a fascinating experience. We discovered some other medieval features as well as the wall painting, such as the blocked windows on the south wall. It’s exciting to find something that hasn’t been seen for centuries, to be the first person to look at and touch it in hundreds of years.

Wall painting - credit, Andrew Ferrara.

The wall painting behnd the panelling

What do you find interesting about this find?

I find the painting itself very interesting. On the petals of the flower motif, you can still see the brush strokes. I wonder if the painter ever imagined that their work would survive centuries, and seven hundred years later someone would be writing a blog about their painting? It really makes the art human; it’s easy to visualise somebody standing in front of that wall, creating this beautiful piece of artwork. In addition to this, you get a sense of what the whole room looked like during this time. Were all the walls decorated with this flower motif? Was one wall decorated differently from the others, like a feature wall? Was each wall split into sections, each with a separate design?

Dr Andrew Farrara, Department of Archaeology, with Archaeology students Nattakrit Wanthanom (University College), and Oriana. The oyster shell was found jammed into the revealed stonework.

What other finds have you worked on during your time here?

Last summer, I excavated at Bishop Auckland, which was my first dig. The first few days were hard; I wondered if I had taken the wrong course, but a few days in, I was enjoying it. We excavated part of the medieval garden wall on the north terrace of the palace. That was probably the most exciting find in our trench. We excavated a lot of animal bones and oyster shells, so mostly kitchen waste, someone did find a medieval jetton – a counter or token - on the north side of the wall. Overall, the excavation was a wonderful experience, and I got a sense of what being a field archaeologist is like. I think it’s important to gain these experiences, especially when doing a subject you have never studied before. Before this dig, I didn’t know how much physical labour went into excavation. I assumed most of it was done for us; we just found the good stuff!

I am a Chevening scholar from Tonga pursuing an LLM in Corporate Law at Durham University. It feels both exciting and a bit surreal. Travelling 30+ hours from a small Pacific island to a historic city in the North-East of England with cobbled streets, a castle and cathedral views does seem quite the leap, but Durham has a way of making even the most distant journeys feel worthwhile. My college, University College, which is in an actual Castle, is welcoming and feels like I have stumbled into Hogwarts.

My brain's daily workout

A Master’s in Corporate Law is intense and builds character in the best 'I need more coffee' kind of way. It isn’t just about mastering legislation and case laws, but it is taught by professors who challenge the way you think, and occasionally make you re-think your life choices (all part of the learning process, of course). You leave each class feeling a little smarter than when you walked in.

In some of my modules, seminars can feel like a global board meeting, thanks to the diverse student backgrounds; thankfully, no hostile takeovers have occurred...yet.

Why I chose Durham (and why YOU should as well!)

I’d say Durham University chose me as much as I chose it. I wanted a university with a good reputation in law and located in a city small enough that it wouldn’t swallow me whole. Durham is perfect – cosy, prestigious, and just the right size for a girl from a small island.

Durham University’s collegiate system is a bonus. Formal dinners wearing gowns in the Great Hall feels like you’re in the Harry Potter movies, a reminder that university life can be both academically challenging and fun.

As a Chevening scholar, I encourage applicants to choose Durham University, a place I believe will help me achieve not only my academic goals but also help me grow into a leader who makes real change. I believe Durham University offers top-level teaching, a supportive collegiate community and a city that feels safe and homely.

If you want a place that is prestigious, safe, and sprinkled with a tinge of magic, Durham University is the place. It’s where you can learn without feeling too overwhelmed.

Life outside the classroom

To have the full university experience, life outside of the classroom matters as well. Durham has its own charm, from a peaceful river walk to various events that light up the city (literally). I’ve joined college social functions, cultural events, academic talks, and even participated in an archery competition. Why not add “can shoot arrows” to my CV?

Durham University may be thousands of miles away from home, but it has become my second home, a place where I’ve grown academically and personally. If you’re thinking of choosing Durham - DO IT, be a part of a magical experience both academically and personally.
