Last year, I was allocated to Trevelyan College at Durham University, and I honestly had no idea what to expect. The idea of moving away from home, starting university, and meeting hundreds of new faces felt exciting but also completely overwhelming. Like many others, I was nervous, unsure, and a little bit homesick.
A whirlwind of activities
But then Freshers’ Week happened. Right from the moment I arrived, Trevs (as it’s affectionately called) had something going on. It all kicked off with Undergraduate College Matriculation – our official welcome to the college and university. From there, everything unfolded in a blur of activities, laughter, and new experiences.
There was a JCR photograph, where I first started chatting with a few people I’d later end up going to events with. Then came the Campus Card Collection and ID Verification – not the most thrilling part of the week, but still another chance to meet others going through the same motions.

Evening activities
The days were busy, and the evenings were even better. One night, we had a Ghost Walk through Durham, honestly, one of the coolest ways to explore the city and its spooky history. That same evening, we had two event options: a lively 70s Horror Bar Night or more Relaxed Activities for those wanting a chill vibe.
I loved that there was something for everyone, no matter your energy or social battery. The week continued with a Silent Disco, College BBQ, and a buzzing Societies’ Fair. All these events gave me a chance to get talking to people, join clubs, and just throw myself into Durham life. And while the fun and chaos helped distract from feeling homesick, what made it truly special was the people.
Friends for life
During one of the events, by complete chance, I ended up sitting next to someone I’d never met before. We started talking, laughed over something silly, and just… clicked. That person is now my best friend, someone I couldn’t imagine going through uni without. And it all started during Freshers’ Week.
There were also plenty of support sessions throughout, like Assistant Student Support Officer Office Hours and Assistant Principal’s Office Hours. Knowing there were people to talk to if I ever needed help made everything a lot less scary.
Trev’s is home
Looking back, Trevelyan College gave me so much more than just a place to live. Freshers’ Week helped me feel like I belonged, even when I wasn’t sure I would. It was engaging, active, and full of the kind of moments that pull you out of your shell. If you’re about to start at Durham, know that you’re in for a week that could change everything. It certainly did for me.
