Big changes in life, such as starting your undergraduate journey might seem scary at first but don’t worry, I am here to give a little insight into what my BA Marketing and Management experience looks like at Durham University.

Modules and activities

Throughout the three-year course, there were so many engaging modules, projects and activities I came across, that helped me develop on a professional and personal level. Some of my favourite modules include:

Marketing Strategy in Practice (Year 1): This involved us students participating in an online simulation game, where we had to form teams and brainstorm an entire brand and its strategy, from the mission statement all the way to the retail environment, competing with other ‘agencies’ in the class.

Digital Marketing: Tools and Techniques (Year 2): Teaching us how to create content utilising industry-wide applied applications and platforms. Our assessment included the creation of an infographic through a site called Canva, which sounded challenging at first as I’ve never used this format and software before, however with the Professor’s guidance and the information provided in the workshops it was a walk-in the park, teaching me many useful digital skills along the way.

Behavioural Science Marketing Project (Final Year): A module available as a substitute to the conventional dissertation. I really like the fact that we could choose which exam route we wanted to take, also carrying out my own behavioural science project has been a very exciting and rewarding experience. The assessment included presenting our findings at a project conference with actual professionals and experts present, creating a fantastic networking opportunites.

Skills unlocked

Durham University strives to make sure the course focuses on teaching us skills applicable in all aspects of our future careers, integrating the uses of essential software like Excel, PowerPoint, Sway (… etc), and skills such as team-working, research, critical thinking, problem-solving and time management and so on. I found this really appealing as it had been helping me prepare for graduate life.

Facilities

The brand-new business building at Waterside has been a great addition to the university, with facilities such as quiet study rooms, a financial trading lab, comfortable seating areas and study booths with large monitors. I’ve been using these every day for the individual and team assignments.

Support available

Finally, one of my absolute favourite aspects of my course has been all the support and resources provided by the university. The Business School has a dedicated teaching and learning and student support team that is there to help with any questions, concerns or feedback students might have.

Roles and opportunities

The department offers representative roles allowing us to take part by communicating feedback to academic staff, which can help us gain skills like communication and public speaking. Furthermore, there have been plenty of opportunities to gain experience through department-wide competitions, research projects and talks with industry experts, these opportunities are great for anyone who is looking to engage and build their CV.
