A day in the life of a Theology, Ministry and Mission student at Cranmer Hall

My mornings

As a student who commutes, my mornings start nice and early with a drive to Durham, and then a 15 minute walk to college. For a lot of my walk I’m surrounded by greenery as I approach the sight of Durham Cathedral – an awesome and inspiring start to the day!

At 08:30, we have morning prayer at St Mary the Less Chapel, which is a great opportunity to settle our hearts and fixate our eyes on God before diving into study.

Lectures

Then at 9 am, I have either a free period or a lecture, depending on the day. I honestly love the lectures here at Cranmer. Not only are they intellectually and spiritually stimulating, but the environment really cultivates personal formation, growth, and discipleship. The lectures foster great discussion in and out of the classroom and we’re always learning from lecturers as well as each other.

Short break and back to study

After a morning lecture, we’ll have a break, which I like using to grab a coffee and catch up with classmates, or if it’s later, then we’ll sit in the common room and have lunch together.

Then back to work! After afternoon lectures, I normally head over to the library to do some work on my own, whether that be admin, reading, or getting on with an assignment. St John’s Library is my go-to, and I like sitting by the windows, so don’t steal my spot 😀

Social and communal time

Even though I’d consider myself an introvert, spending time with others plays a massive part in my experience as a student, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so. That might be going to Christian Union, going out for food, Bible study, or going for a walk.

I try to get most of my work done through the day before 6 pm to open that space for time in the evening to connect with others without the stress of knowing I have to do work. Or sometimes I’ll spend more time with people in the day when I’m free and block out time in the evening to do work.

Winding down

After a long day, I normally get back home later in the evening, which is where I wind down and get into bed, ideally before 11 pm, but I’m not the best at sticking to that!
