What does it really feel like to study LLM Law at Durham?
If you are considering applying for an LLM (Master of Laws), one of the questions you probably care about most is what this year of study can actually bring you.
For me, one of the clearest feelings since coming to Durham is that studying here is not simply about continuing to learn law. It is also about gradually gaining a clearer sense of the kind of legal professional I want to become. The LLM Law programme is not just about reading cases, understanding legal rules, and writing essays. It also gives you the space to rethink your interests, your previous experience, and your long-term career direction. If, like me, you are interested in commercial law and are thinking about a future career in company law or related business fields, this year of study can help you see much more clearly how academic learning connects with professional development.
How does the course connect with future career development?
For many students, choosing an LLM is not only about continuing their legal education. It is also about whether this experience can genuinely help with future employment. That has been especially important for me.
Before coming to the UK, I had already worked in China as a legal professional at a listed company, where I was involved in corporate compliance, M&A, and dispute resolution. Because of that background, I naturally pay close attention to whether the course can help me develop a deeper understanding of complex commercial legal issues and rethink business transactions, risk management, and legal decision-making from a more international perspective. For me, the value of an LLM does not lie simply in learning more legal knowledge. More importantly, it lies in turning previous practical experience into more mature legal judgment and stronger analytical skills through systematic academic training.
If you are also considering working in companies, law firms, or other cross-border commercial legal settings in the future, I think this process of connecting your studies to your career goals is incredibly valuable.

What practical opportunities are there beyond the classroom?
I participated in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and travelled to Vienna as a student coach. For me, the most meaningful part of this experience was not only the competition itself, but also the opportunity to see how international commercial arbitration is really shaped by argument, communication, and collaboration. At the same time, I had the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with students from different countries and different law schools. Experiences like this make you realise that legal education is not only about completing academic work on your own. It is also closely connected to advocacy, teamwork, cross-cultural communication, and the ability to solve problems under pressure.
So if you are concerned that an LLM might feel too theoretical, I would say that at Durham there are also many opportunities to connect legal study with practical experience.

How has this year shaped the way I think about my future?
For me, one of the most important things about studying the LLM at Durham is that it has helped me think more clearly about the kind of legal professional I hope to become.
After graduation, I plan to continue working in corporate legal practice and to develop my expertise in company and commercial law. However, my understanding of that goal has now become much more specific. I increasingly believe that the value of a legal professional lies not only in identifying risks and resolving disputes, but also in understanding the real needs of a business, supporting its development, and helping it make sound and forward-looking decisions in a complex commercial environment, while always upholding legal boundaries, professional ethics, and integrity. This is one reason why I value my experience at Durham so highly. It has not only strengthened my legal knowledge but also helped me see more clearly how academic study, practical experience, and future career development can come together.
