Finding the right degree and university
Before coming to Durham, I struggled with choosing a University and degree. However, I enjoyed studying Business at school, and I was particularly fascinated by why some firms succeeded and others didn’t. Business was a subject that allowed me to think more laterally and apply my ideas practically; therefore, I decided to pursue Business Studies at Durham University.
When choosing a university, besides the academic excellence and teaching, I considered the location and extracurricular activities to make sure that I would enjoy living there for the next three years. The collegiate system, the beautiful scenery, the reputation of the Business School and societies were big incentives for me. The range of both academic and non-academic opportunities that Durham offers allowed me to experience college life to the full and make amazing friends. I have joined a number of societies and have had the benefit of taking on various roles within them to develop my leadership skills.
What it’s like to study Business and Management at Durham
Business and Management at Durham University differs greatly from what I was used to studying at school. At school, we learned the theoretical aspect of business and prepared for exams, whereas at university, we learn how to critically analyse business concepts and apply them to real-life situations. Studying Business and Management here has also broadened my understanding of the business world in general, since we learn not only about business concepts and theory but also about organisational behaviour, operations, accounting, economy, and marketing – just to name a few!
One of the most beneficial things about studying at Durham is that no two weeks are the same. We learn a variety of topics, each of which provides us with a different insight into the world of Business and Management. All of the lecturers are highly experienced in their fields, and our seminars give us an opportunity to share and discuss practical knowledge with other students. The course develops a wide range of both soft and hard skills, which will be greatly valued after my time here.
Making the most of student life
I have also had a fantastic opportunity to get more involved in the amazing extracurricular activities Durham has to offer. For example, I am a Head of Fundraising and Sponsorship at Durham University Caledonian Society (CALSOC). Organising and running fundraising events for the society has allowed me to apply many of the skills I’ve developed during my degree, from planning and communication to working with external organisations. My involvement in the Northumbria University Training Corps (NUOTC) has given me an opportunity to participate in various field exercises, adventurous and leadership opportunities. Experiences like these have been just as valuable as what I’ve learned in lectures.
Looking back, choosing Durham was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve grown academically, developed new skills, and met lifelong friends.
