As a Business and Management student at Durham, the average work week consists of a mixture of lectures and seminars alongside extra reading around the subject. I enjoy the seminars for Business as it allows me to discuss the course topics in a smaller setting and hear different ideas from people. Before the seminar, we get given some wider reading or research to complete, which helps us prepare for the class and what activities we’ll be doing. The Business School’s new building, Waterside, is my usual study spot as it’s in the town centre and has lots of different areas to study. I like it because it’s less busy than the Bill Bryson library, which is on the other side of town.
Our assessments are done in essay format at the end of each term. The assessments help to conclude what we learn in each module and to expand upon the reading that we’ve been doing. We usually write essays at the end of each module or at the end of term, and we are given well over a month to complete them.
My favourite class so far has been the Finance module, as it allowed me to understand the numbers behind how businesses run. A class I’m really enjoying in my second year is Consumer Behaviour. I find it interesting as it dives into the details of how consumers make decisions based on how firms market their products in both specific ways to target certain consumers and in subtle ways that can only be seen if you fully analyse them.
I always walk to my lectures with my friends that I have made on my course, which is nice as I often spend the evenings with friends I have made through Van Mildert. I go to the Cheer Practice at my college, and I go to the Padel Society – it’s a good way to make friends. I also like to participate in the Finance Society and the Economics Society as a way to widen my current business knowledge, that I get from the course. They are really sociable as well and have good career and networking opportunities.
