A day in the life of a Durham Business Student

Hi, I’m Hannah! I’m in my second year as a Business student, and I wanted to share a glimpse into a day in my life in Durham.

Morning

My day kicks off with my favourite morning ritual: heading to the Bill Bryson Library. It’s my go-to spot for tackling readings and prepping for seminars. As a business student, you’ll find that independent study is key, and there’s no shortage of reading to keep you busy outside of lectures.

Lunch in college

Once I’ve conquered my morning readings, I make my way back to Trevelyan College (Trevs) for lunch and the food is surprisingly good. I often get asked during open days if I’m just saying that for show but it’s true – it’s actually not bad!  Wednesday’s lunches are especially good, so don’t skip them.

Afternoon

In the afternoons, I usually have a lecture or a seminar scheduled. Typically, I have 9 to 10 contact hours each week. The campus is incredibly walkable, and because Durham is so pretty, it always makes me want to walk everywhere. My lectures often take place at Lower Mountjoy (near the library), but I also find myself at the very modern new Business School, Waterside, which is conveniently located near the town centre. It’s perfect for a quick pit stop at Tesco or a cheeky Greggs in between classes!

Lectures

Lectures are typically two hours long with a five-minute breather in the middle. I enjoy going to lectures as they’re well structured, interesting and really engaging. One of my favourite things was playing a weekly Kahoot game in the People, Organisation, and Management module, which my friends were definitely envious of! It also made sure I did revision from the week before because I am very competitive. For Business and Management, we usually have one big assignment for each module that’s worth the whole grade for the class. Everything you need to know is covered in the lectures, so it’s important that you attend, even if it’s at 6 pm and you really want to go eat dinner.

Dinner and downtime

After wrapping up my classes for the day, I head back to college for dinner before diving into societies or hanging out with friends.

Wednesdays are a little different because it’s Sports and Wellbeing Day. This means that everyone gets Wednesday afternoon off to take a break, participate in sports or societies. Many teams, both college and DU, have training sessions or matches on Wednesday afternoons. I joined my college’s Ultimate Frisbee team (TUF), which has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s so much fun and surprisingly competitive! Last year, we won our league and got promoted to the Premiership, so I’m super excited for next season. I highly recommend that everyone join a sports team if they can, even if they don’t consider themselves very sporty. There are so many options, and it’s a lot of fun. If you’re at Trevs, shameless plug, join TUF!
