You’re probably reading this if you are considering applying or have received an offer to study Theology at Durham (congratulations!). Choosing to study here was the best decision I could have made. With its outstanding academic reputation, and a supportive, close community of students and staff, the Theology department has shaped my university experience and made me genuinely love and enjoy my degree!
What it’s like to be a Theology student at Durham
Studying Theology at Durham is a one-of-a-kind experience, and you are part of a vibrant community at the heart of Durham University. Theology is one of the university’s founding disciplines since 1832 and tied to the rich history of Durham Cathedral. I find it incredible to learn from leading theologians in the field, and there’s something truly inspiring about writing essays in The Sharp Library (based in the Cathedral!), knowing you’re sitting where countless theologians have studied before you.
Usefully, the 3 undergraduate programmes are structured to help you discover your interests within Theology. In first year, I studied broader topics like the History of Christianity, and introductions to the Bible and Christian Theology. Now that I am in second year, I can focus on specific areas within those topics including the Reformation, the Old Testament and Catholic Theology in the Modern World.

Support within the department community
The Theology department is a close-knit community, so you really get to know the staff who are super helpful! Every lecturer has designated office hours, where you can ask questions about a lecture, and you will also be assigned an academic advisor. Tea and biscuits are often involved at these meetings too – so that’s a bonus! The Theology department wants you to succeed, and they will go the extra mile to help you achieve your full potential!
Social aspects of the Theology department
Within the Theology community, there is the Theology Society which is a student-run organisation. It has a close relationship to the department, with members of the faculty holding academic talks, and the society organising lots of fun events throughout the year.

A typical event might include meeting your ‘Theology family.’ I found this super useful in first year, as I was able to ask my ‘parents’ (who were second year students) for tips and advice about the course. Another of my favourite events was the Theology Ball which was held at the beautiful Lumley Castle. It was an amazing event, which featured a 3 course-meal, disco, photobooth and live music!
