I am a Chevening scholar from Tonga pursuing an LLM in Corporate Law at Durham University. It feels both exciting and a bit surreal. Travelling 30+ hours from a small Pacific island to a historic city in the North-East of England with cobbled streets, a castle and cathedral views does seem quite the leap, but Durham has a way of making even the most distant journeys feel worthwhile. My college, University College, which is in an actual Castle, is welcoming and feels like I have stumbled into Hogwarts.
My brain’s daily workout
A Master’s in Corporate Law is intense and builds character in the best ‘I need more coffee’ kind of way. It isn’t just about mastering legislation and case laws, but it is taught by professors who challenge the way you think, and occasionally make you re-think your life choices (all part of the learning process, of course). You leave each class feeling a little smarter than when you walked in.
In some of my modules, seminars can feel like a global board meeting, thanks to the diverse student backgrounds; thankfully, no hostile takeovers have occurred…yet.

Why I chose Durham (and why YOU should as well!)
I’d say Durham University chose me as much as I chose it. I wanted a university with a good reputation in law and located in a city small enough that it wouldn’t swallow me whole. Durham is perfect – cosy, prestigious, and just the right size for a girl from a small island.
Durham University’s collegiate system is a bonus. Formal dinners wearing gowns in the Great Hall feels like you’re in the Harry Potter movies, a reminder that university life can be both academically challenging and fun.
As a Chevening scholar, I encourage applicants to choose Durham University, a place I believe will help me achieve not only my academic goals but also help me grow into a leader who makes real change. I believe Durham University offers top-level teaching, a supportive collegiate community and a city that feels safe and homely.
If you want a place that is prestigious, safe, and sprinkled with a tinge of magic, Durham University is the place. It’s where you can learn without feeling too overwhelmed.

Life outside the classroom
To have the full university experience, life outside of the classroom matters as well. Durham has its own charm, from a peaceful river walk to various events that light up the city (literally). I’ve joined college social functions, cultural events, academic talks, and even participated in an archery competition. Why not add “can shoot arrows” to my CV?
Durham University may be thousands of miles away from home, but it has become my second home, a place where I’ve grown academically and personally. If you’re thinking of choosing Durham – DO IT, be a part of a magical experience both academically and personally.
