Studying the Master of Laws (LLM) at Durham University has been one of those experiences that quietly reshapes how you think about law, about your career, and, honestly, about yourself. I came to Durham drawn by its academic reputation and collegiate charm, but what I’ve found is something far more dynamic: a space where law feels alive, evolving, and deeply connected to the real world.
My academic life
My academic interests revolve around Corporate Law, Intellectual Property Rights, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Technology, Media and Telecommunications. While that might sound like a long list, what ties it all together is a curiosity about how law interacts with business and innovation. Whether it is regulating digital platforms or structuring complex corporate deals, I am constantly pushed to think beyond the black letter law and ask: how does this actually work in practice?
What makes the LLM at Durham stand out is the way learning happens. It is not about passively listening; it is about engaging, questioning, and sometimes even disagreeing (respectfully, of course). Seminars feel more like conversations than lectures, and that has helped me become far more confident in expressing my ideas and defending my arguments. It has also made me realise that there is rarely a single “right” answer in law, just better, more persuasive ones.
Outside of academics
Outside the classroom, my experience has been just as formative. I work with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team at Durham, contributing to initiatives that aim to make the university a more inclusive and supportive space. This role has added a completely different dimension to my time here, reminding me that law is not just about rules; it is also about people and fairness.
I am also a Postgraduate Law Ambassador, which essentially means I get to talk (a lot) about my experience at Durham to prospective students. It has been surprisingly rewarding to reflect on my journey while helping others navigate theirs. Plus, if you ever wondered whether you truly understand something, try explaining it to someone else. It is the ultimate test.
And then there is my role as Social Secretary for my college, which is exactly as chaotic and fun as it sounds. From organising events to making sure people actually show up, it has taught me more about coordination, teamwork, and last-minute problem-solving than I expected from a law degree.
Before and after Durham
Before Durham, I had the opportunity to intern at organisations such as AZB and Partners, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and Company, PharmEasy, boAt Lifestyle, and even with a Bombay High Court judge. These experiences sparked my interest in corporate law, but Durham has helped me refine it, challenge it, and turn it into a clearer career direction.
Looking ahead, I hope to work in corporate law, particularly in mergers and acquisitions or a technology-focused practice. Long term, I want to be at the intersection of law, business, and technology, ideally working on matters that are as complex as they are impactful.
If there is one thing Durham has taught me, it is this: the law is not static, and neither are we. And that is exactly what makes this journey so exciting.
