When I stepped into Durham for the first time, suitcase in hand and heart full of hopes, I knew this year would be transformative — but I didn’t expect to feel at home so quickly. As an international student from Bangkok, Thailand, starting the MSc Management (Entrepreneurship) programme, everything felt exciting, unfamiliar, and beautifully historic.
A city that feels like a storybook
Durham welcomed me with cobblestone streets, the majestic cathedral looking over the city, and the gentle flow of the River Wear. The city is small enough to feel safe and walkable, but vibrant enough to feel full of life. I remember thinking, This is exactly the kind of place where growth feels possible.
Being a member of University College (Castle) made my arrival even more magical. Walking through the Castle grounds for the first time — knowing I would study, eat, and make memories there — felt surreal.

Academic life: Challenging in the best way
The MSc Management programme surprised me with its interactive teaching style. Seminars feel more like conversations than classes, and we are encouraged to voice our opinions, debate ideas, and think critically. Coming from a different educational background, I found this refreshing and empowering.
Our cohort is wonderfully diverse. In my first classes, I met students from all over the world — each bringing a different perspective that makes discussions richer. The lecturers are approachable, supportive, and genuinely want to help us grow academically and professionally.
One unexpected highlight was the International Study Tour, an opportunity that broadened my understanding of global business in a real-world context. Learning outside the classroom — visiting companies, engaging with industry professionals, and exploring new cultures with classmates — gave me a deeper appreciation of how theory connects with practice. It was not only enriching academically but also a memorable bonding experience with peers from different backgrounds.

The college system: Community from day one
One of the most unique aspects of Durham is the college system. University College gives me a strong sense of belonging — something every international student hopes for. From freshers’ week and formal dinners to casual nights hanging out with new friends, the college makes it much easier to connect with people and feel part of a community.

Life beyond the classroom
Some of my favourite first experiences came from stepping outside lectures. I joined a dog therapy event and signed up for a volunteering event to help clean Dragon Park. These moments helped me connect with local culture, meet people beyond my course, and make Durham feel like home.
There were also spontaneous memories — like meeting new friends in college, participating in a painting activity, and exploring cafés hidden in tiny alleyways.

Adjusting to life in the UK
As an international student, adapting to a new country always comes with learning curves. The weather changes quickly, grocery shopping is an adventure, and learning how to cook becomes a necessity! But Durham is incredibly friendly, and there are support systems everywhere — from the International Office to academic advisors.
Slowly, the unfamiliar starts to become comfortable.

Looking back: Was Durham the right choice?
Absolutely. My first weeks taught me that studying at Durham is not just about getting a degree — it’s about living within a community, discovering new strengths, and building a life in a new country.
